US politician pushes for new palladium American Eagle coin 24th September 2010

The motion, which is being labelled the American Eagle Palladium Bullion Coin Act of 2010, was proposed by Montana-based Republican politician Denny Rehberg.
Reports suggest that the designs for both the obverse and reverse of the coins will be based on the work of famous US sculptor Adoplh Alexander Weinman.
The former would show Mr Weinman's 'Winged Liberty' design, which featured on the 'Mercury Dime' between 1916 and 1945, while the latter would contain a high-relief version of his 1907 American Institute of Architects medal.
If the coins materialise, Mr Rehberg said the Secretary of the Treasury must ensure that "the surface treatment of each year's proof or uncirculated version differs in some material way from that of the preceding year".
The legislation also suggested that the palladium for the coins should be sourced domestically, presumably through Stillwater Mining Company's operations in Montana.
Last year, Mr Rehberg introduced a bill which called for the creation of palladium $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle coins, but it eventually stalled in Congress
