A woman's face with Nature's own hand painted
Hast thou, the master-mistress of my passion;
A woman's gentle heart, but not acquainted
With shifting change, as is false women's fashion;
An eye more bright than theirs, less false in rolling,
Gilding the object whereupon it gazeth;
A man in hue, all 'hues' in his controlling,
Much steals men's eyes and women's souls amazeth.
And for a woman wert thou first created;
Till Nature, as she wrought thee, fell a-doting,
And by addition me of thee defeated,
By adding one thing to my purpose nothing.

But since she prick'd thee out for women's pleasure,
Mine be thy love and thy love's use their treasure.

Famous Detective writers from England
Guest Author - Nicola Jane Soen

What can one say about English Literature? One of the things England is famous for is its detective novels; and who could be more famous than Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie? Doyle is of course famous for the greatest English mind that ever lived; Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Christie brought many stories to life from Miss. Marple the elderly sleuth to Belgian detective genius Piorot.

Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle was born 22 May, 1859. His writing was not always related to Sherlock Holmes, he also wrote science fiction, poetry and historical novels among other things. Doyle actually practised medicine, before he became famous for his writing. This does show itself in the botanical knowledge and medical profession of both Sherlock Holmes and his faithful companion Dr. Watson.

Doyle was also known for being a spiritualist. In this time in history psychic phenomena was proving very interesting to the aristocracy it was all the range to attend séances. Sadly Arthur Conan Doyle died aged 71 in 1930.
Thankfully his legacy lives on through Holmes, who at the request of public protest was resurrected in the novel ‘The Empty House,’ after actually being killed off together with his Arch nemesis Dr. Moriarty.

Agatha Christie wrote in a different style to Doyle, indeed a different era. 1930s Britain had changed and gone were the times of Mr. Holmes. Poirot and Miss. Marple were the vogue now along with the Architecture of Clarence Clifford and the Charleston. Born in September 1890 Agatha wrote more novels than many authors ever hope too, and her novels sold, by the billion.

Films of her detectives are watches by thousands, from the elderly insightful Miss Jane Marple, who solved crime in the sleepy village of St. Mary Mead and other towns of quaint England to Hurcule Piorot the Belgian detective who was NOT French- As he so often had to point out!

Piorot with his exacting routine and neatly manicure moustaches and impeccable dress and manner was the same yet different, with his ‘little grey cells’ as Agatha called them; he made the most callous of crimes simple to solve and the lowest of criminals were exposed by his intelligence and observatory behaviour.

So many people have delighted over the writings of both Doyle and Christie, with many young dreamers wanting to be detectives when they grew up. Though Doyle and Christie are both gone their stories still spellbind millions. What was that? Do I hear a scream from the dining room? I better get out my magnifying glass!

Thanks to Wikipedia for their excellent features on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie; which I read for this article. To read more on these detectives look up

The Real Anne Boleyn
Guest Author - Nicola Jane Soen

Anne Boleyn is a tragic figure in the life of Henry VIII. Scheming and manipulative she was made the Queen of all England, only to lose her head six months after her rival, Catherine of Aragon died. Her sister Mary had been Henry’s mistress and had born his children and raised her family fortunes to great heights.

Anne was different, born around the date 1507; she refused to become Henry’s mistress. She is famous for uttering the immortal words ‘Your wife I cannot be, as you have one already and your mistress I will not be.’ This decision was to change the face of English history. Henry infatuated, divorced his wife of nearly 20 years and cut off England from the Catholic faith to do so. The English people were furious, their loyalty lay with Catherine. Anne was hated and nicknamed Nan Bullen and The goggle eyed whore by the English people. At her coronation the streets were silent and people had to be paid to cheer at all.

Their father Thomas Boleyn was not born high. He began as a lowly knight. To give his child a chance to climb the ambitious ladder and because it was the fashion of the day, knights sent their children away. This often led the way to an advantageous marriage. This was crucial for the rise to wealth and honour for the Boleyn family. Anne was sent to France to be lady-in waiting to the French Queen Claude.

Brought up mostly in France, Anne’s taste was mostly French; when she returned home she was given a post in Queen Catherine’s service as a lady-in-waiting. Her sister was already one of Henry’s mistresses. Anne set her sights high when she fell for Henry Percy; elder son of the powerful family of Northumberland. Henry was furious, he wanted Anne for himself, so he had Percy banished and married off. Percy was a broken man and Anne was heartbroken. She herself did not know it was Henry who had done this, and blamed Wolsey, Henry’s right hand man. She also helped in his downfall. She refused to become Henry's mistress insisting that her virtue was most precious and worthy of marriage.

Henry broke with Rome for her and they were married in secret in 1533.
Anne bore Henry a daughter, Elizabeth in the same year; she was devastated because it was not a son, but Henry was still enamoured of her. However her temper and lack of royal breeding were already beginning to grate on Henry’s nerves. Things began to go rapidly down hill, and in January 1536, when her second pregnancy was not only lost; but was a dead son; her doom was sealed.

Henry was already enamoured of Jane Seymour and ordered his advisers to get rid of Anne somehow; and release him to remarry. Anne was accused of adultery, incest and witchcraft, and was sentenced to death. Also sentenced to death were the most popular courtiers of the court; her brother George and several friends, Weston, Brereton, Norris and her musician Mark Smeaton among them.

She was given the magnanimous justice and mercy of Henry by being beheaded; not by the English axe, which was barbaric and often took many stokes; but by a swordsman from Calais, paid for by the King’s generous purse. As there was no preparation made for her burial she was put in a arrow chest, that her body fitted only because she had lost her head. She left a daughter of two who was to become the greatest Queen England would ever have.

Life in Stuart England and 1666
Guest Author - Nicola Jane Soen

What was it like to live in Stuart England? What lifestyles did they have?
As history has altered; so have the things that are quintessentially English.
In Tudor times it was epitomised by Henry VIII with rich clothing and low beamed houses, the Has Puts jutting out over the street to the neighbours’ roof. The stink of the Thames, is what most visitors would say! By the Stuart times, not much had changed. Feathered plumes and periwigs for the men, but everything else was much the same..

In Stuart times, one of the things that was known about England was how much she smelled! The garbage ran through the streets, Chamber pots were emptied out of the bedroom windows, onto the unsuspecting walker beneath!
People rarely bathed. In fact, most thought that bathing was very bad for you! Elizabeth the First was proud of the fact that she used to have a bath every few months!

Pigs ran through the streets eating the refuse. On the floor in houses or huts; rushes, (cut reeds) were used as a covering instead of carpet, which had not reached England yet. The rushes in some homes were never changed and consequently disease was rampant.

The poor lived in absolute stinking poverty, and groups of beggars were absolutely lethal if they caught a wealthy man or woman on a dark night. That is why link boys as they were known, would carry a light at night, to light up the darkness and get the wealthy man to safety if necessary; of course the danger was the link boy could be killed too. The night watchman could be heard yelling ‘turn out yer light.’

Criminals had their own special trades, Foists and Horn thumbs jostled the crowds waiting for the opportunity of getting a little money that was not their own. They often worked with the local Ballard seller, who would have printed out the latest song or verse and be singing it to sell on a street corner. The stocks often had someone who had committed a crime in full view of the public, to be mocked by them and have refuse thrown at them.

The Bells of London would all ring out with their own particular melodies, some with strange tales attached; like the church of St. Michael Arch Angel, who was supposed to have the devils claw mark deeply scratched in its windowsill. Going with the clanging of the bells would be the shouts of the stalls and ware sellers crying out to passers by: ‘Frrrrrrrresh Fish’ ‘buy a pie, Penny each,’ each seller had a personal chant for the particular goods they sold. The noise was extremely loud, but the Londoners loved it.

If you needed work you could go to the Qusi door in St. Paul’s and see what kind of employment was advertised, rough wood cuts, cheaply printed would be stuck on the door. And one could sit on a bench and wait to be inspected by potential employers. Children worked too, unless they were of wealthy parentage and had been sent out as pages or to school. Boys were often brought up in the home of a wealthy sponsor and taught with the sponsors own children. Often marriages were arranged between families this way. Although girls were not sponsored; they learned skills at home, needlework and how to manage servants. They would sometimes go to live with the family of their betrothed though, to learn the tutelage of housekeeping under their prospective husband’s mother’s stern eye. Travel was a crowded affair.

There was much hustle and bustle, carts and domestic animals crossing the London Bridge, and often the shout of ‘FIRE’ as most houses were built of wood. Then the fire men would come with their hand held fire quirters, and long pulling poles and pull down the offending, burning building, and sometimes the house next to it. It is surprising there is only one major fire incident; the dreadful fire of 1666.

The fire of 1666 changed the face of London forever. Right through to Cripplegate from the Thames and from the Temple Stairs to Brewers Key had London been burned. Many thousands were homeless. However the fire was a blessing in a small way, it did halt the spread of plague which had been killing thousands since it spread badly in 1665. Londoners including King Charles himself helped to put out the fire and then began the rebuilding of the city. London would never be the same again.

Common British Slang Words and Terminology
Guest Author - Karyn Johnson

Anyone who travels to England may hear some strange words and phrases spoken in the everyday British lexicon. Some of these words are important to decipher if you’re going to order food or go shopping. Others are just handy to know if you want to understand what people are saying. Here is a basic glossary of some of the most common slang and colloquialisms that you will hear in British English. By no means does it cover everything.

Not slang, but useful to know:

In Britain, trousers are the equivalent of what Americans call pants. The British think of the word pants as underwear ( knickers will also be used). If you plan to do any shopping in Britain, be aware of this distinction! You don’t want to ask the sales clerk to help you find a pair of pants, and then suddenly find yourself in the underwear section.

If you’re getting your hair fixed, you may or may not want fringe (bangs) and you might want someone to plait (braid) your hair.

An elevator in Britain is called a lift. Restrooms are commonly referred to as loos, but in your travels, you may see signs for the WC (water closet). If you want to buy a ticket to get into a museum, you need to stand in the queue (line).

When driving a car in Britain, always check under the bonnet (hood) to make sure the oil doesn’t need to be topped up (filled up/replenished). Make sure you have enough wiper fluid to keep the windscreen (windshield) clean. Your luggage goes in the boot (trunk) of the car. And if you need more fuel, you want to stop at a petrol (gas) station.

If someone invites you to their flat, then you are going to visit their apartment.

When you have a conversation with anyone British, you want to end the conversation with a friendly “Cheers!” before you go on your way.

Know what you’re eating and drinking:

The British have come up with some unusual names for some rather common dishes. If you see Bangers and Mash on a menu, it’s sausage and mashed potatoes. Bubble and Squeak is a dish comprised of leftover potatoes, cabbage, and perhaps some beef. Jacket potatoes are actually baked potatoes (so called because the skin, or “jacket,” is still on). Prawns are shrimp.

Remember that biscuits in the UK are cookies. Chips are french fries. If you want potato chips, you need to ask for crisps.

You may want the food to take away (carry out).

If you order lemonade, you are likely to get some fizzy lemon drink. If you see cider and black at a pub, it is a highly alcoholic cider flavored…ahem, flavoured with black currant. Very sweet, but very delicious!

Common slang terms:

You’ll hear Brits refer to their currency as quid, much in the same way American dollars are “bucks” and Canadian money is called “loonies.”

If someone asks to borrow a fag off you, give them a cigarette.

In Britain, a kiss is called a snog. If someone is knackered, that means they are exhausted. If someone is referred to as "a minger", that means that they’re unattractive. If someone tells you to “Bugger off!,” well, it is suggested that you go away.

If you’re planning a trip to England soon, you might want to pick up the Lonely Planet British Phrasebook. It has a more extensive list of British slang and terminology, and other useful tidbits as well.

Making Sense of British Currency

Making Sense of British Currency Guest Author - Karyn Johnson

If you've never been to Great Britain before, yet plan to visit, it might be helpful to understand the currency before you go. Here is a brief tutorial, so that you can be prepared.

* British currency is in pounds sterling (abbreviated to GBP, Great British Pound, or nicknamed quid by the British). The symbol for this currency is £.

* Just like the dollar is split into 100 cents, the pound is divided into 100 pence (abbreviated as p). If you purchase something that is 95 pence, for example, you will probably be told that the amount is "95 pee" rather than 95 pence. You will see amounts written this way: "95p" or "£0.95."

* Banknotes come in denominations of £5, £10, £20, and £50. They will each be a different size and a different color to allow you to tell them apart more easily. Queen Elizabeth II is on all the bills.

* Coins come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 pence, as well as 1 and 2 pounds.

For images of the current British coins, consult this website by the Woodlands Junior School. They also provide images of banknotes.

Generally, a pound is worth more than a US Dollar ($) or a Euro (€). For current exchange rates, you can visit The Universal Currency Converter.

Old British Money

Now, for a very basic tutorial on old terms for British currency, since movies and literature still refer to shillings, guineas, and crowns. What does all this mean?

* Prior to 1971, a pound was divided into 20 shillings. Each shilling was divided into 12 pennies (also known as pence). For those of you who can't do the math, that's 240 pennies in a pound. A shilling, by the way, is called a bob in slang.

* A guinea was 21 shillings (or one pound, 1 shilling). In other words, 252 pence.

* A crown was worth 5 shillings. A half-crown was worth 2 shillings and 6 pence.

Confused yet?

It gets worse.

A farthing is only worth a quarter of a penny, and a half penny…well, that’s self-explanatory.

And that's not all! But these are probably the most commonly referenced, so I'll leave it at that.

Looking at this confusing lexicon of old currency, aren't you glad they don't use it anymore?

The Value of Gold

Since time immemorial, the value of gold has remained the same. When currency of the different nations had suffered different kinds of fluctuations; gold’s value on the other hand has remained the most stable. Since the discovery of gold, it has been used as a hot commodity by different populations and different civilizations all throughout history. Silver on the other hand, just like gold, also holds its place among the most valuable pieces of ductile metals.
Because of their ductility as metals, they have been shaped to different forms. People used gold for different purposes. But one characteristic of gold and silver is that it is always attached to prestige. People wear gold even in history to showcase status symbol and the stature in society. Look at the monarchs of Europe, their kings and queens have used gold to form their crowns, rings and their different ornaments. In Asia, gold was also used as a means of currency. Even gold during the time were meant to buy even for whole islands.
Nowadays, gold still holds the same prestige in society. Gold deposits of nations make their currencies stable. That’s how valuable gold remained in today’s time. This is among the reasons why it is wise to invest on gold. It gives you two functions, for one, it is an investment of a lifetime that could be passed in inheritance from one generation to the other. And secondly, it can provide class and elegance when someone wears it.

There are reliable companies operating in the US that produce original Landstrom’s jewelry. Ever since, the presence of Landstrom’s Black Hills Gold Jewelry is associated with class and elegance in society. From gold and silver rings, to the different necklaces; these companies cater to the different client’s preferences when it comes to classy jewelries. Among the most popular request of clients are Black Hills gold earrings. The gold earrings are becoming popular since they fit every woman regardless of the age. Black Hills silver rings on the other hand are becoming popular among the male and female clients but more on the male clients.
These companies survived for more than a century now. For a hundred plus years, they survived and served a great number of clients who wanted gold and silver ornaments as part of their attire or sometimes as an investment. The main thing that contributed to their survival was for the fact that they deliver if not surpass the expectations of their clients when it comes to rings, earring and other ornaments made of precious gold or silver. Throughout the years they have catered to different clients, sometimes different generations coming from same family.
Gold and silver beyond just ductile metals has remained a popular among us because elegance and class has been attached with such possession. Gold and silver is more than just jewels that we could display during joyous occasions, these are also investments that could be passed along from one generation to the other. Gold and silver survived the test of time as it maintained its value all throughout history. From one era to the other, the value of gold if not maintained even appreciated.

Travel with Ease

The best thing about traveling is arriving at your destination, no doubt about that. For most people, the mere thought of going on a long overnight flight overseas is enough to scare the living daylight out of them. Flying thousands of miles across the globe need not be a dreadful feat. Though it seems there’s just no way of getting around it, here are some useful tips to ease the suffering that is long-haul flights.
Be prepared
Take cue from the boy scouts and always be prepared. It pays to be organized when it comes to traveling. When your trip is well thought-out, the hassles of going abroad would definitely be lessened, if not totally reduced to nothing. Be organized when it comes to travel essentials and documents, from airline tickets to hotel confirmation print-outs.
The best way of making sure you have all necessary travel paraphernalia is by printing out all the details of your trip before you leave. Stash the list into your hand-carry bag and make an extra copy to be put in your luggage. Take note of factors such as shuttle service schedules, hotel confirmations, directions and phone numbers and arrival and ground transportation details so to minimize confusion. A friend’s recent trip to New Jersey turned out to be a disaster as there was a mix-up in the car and chauffeur service she hired. She rented a stretch limo in NJ to make her arrive on time – and in style – to her brother’s wedding. She ended up being fetched by one of those fancy wedding limos from NJ airport instead.

The Importance off Car Windscreens

Windscreens happen to be one of the most ignored parts of any vehicle. According to many, these screens are just “glass panes to beautify the vehicle”. It is understood that a windscreen does add up to the beauty of the vehicle. However, the same is being included in the vehicles because of other ulterior motives. Some of them will be discussed in the following sections. The reasoning is simple – before you opt for windscreen replacement or windscreen repair procedures, you must have a good understanding about the importance of these structures. Failure to comprehend it will lead to many problems.
When a vehicle is gaining pace, there are primarily two forces acting against the movement of the vehicle-the frictional forces induced into the vehicle from the tires and the surrounding air acting on the surface of the vehicle. The windscreens are placed at a slated posture for that very purpose – to reduce the frictional forces induced into the surface of the vehicle. The same structure will splice easily through the air, thus propelling the vehicle to higher speeds very easily. Have you ever noticed the windscreens included in buses? Now do you realize why buses take more time to gain speeds?
Now that you have realized the purpose of windscreens, allow me to state the construction of an average windshield. Contrary to what you might think, these structures are not merely “panes of glass”. In fact, they used to be a single pane of glass, but the manufacturers were forced to incorporate alternate changes into the composition of the windshield. Nowadays, manufacturers include a thin layer of transparent plastic in between two panes of glass, and thus form a windshield. The reasoning is simple (once again) – in the event of screen cracks and chips, the glass shreds will never land in your eyes!
Pelts of stone or even fruit can induce damage to the windscreen. Anything falling from a certain height will gain speed with the increase of distance – this is elementary physics. Once you realize that the windshield has been cracked or chipped, you must take the vehicle to an authorized dealer, who will replace or repair the windscreen. Unless you have vehicle insurance to back it up, the repair or replacement procedure will induce a large dent in your pocket. Fixing a windshield is a one-time affair; the dealers will ensure that they make the most out of a single customer!

How to Fix a Crack in Car Windscreens

You just bought a new car and you are driving down the highway when you hear a smack on the car windscreen. A rock has some how bounced up from the pavement and now you have a crack in the windscreen. There is no need to panic because it can be repaired before it even gets a chance to spread all the way across. You do need to fix the crack as soon as you can as if it does spread across the windscreen you will need to replace your whole windscreen and that will cost you way more.
If you are a very busy person or work long hours there are a few products on the market that you could use to fix the crack. The products are fairly inexpensive and easy to use.
If you decide to repair the car windscreen yourself here are some simple steps to help you out. Make sure the glass is clean from all dust and dirt otherwise the liquid may not get in the crack properly. Follow the directions and set up the fixed support that is included in the package. There is a cute plunger you will find included in the kit. The plunger is how you are going to add the fixing liquid to the crack. Once the liquid is applied to the crack move your car outside into the direct sunlight for about ten minutes. By letting the car set there and the sun beat on it this is helping the liquid to become hard and seal the crack so it does not spread.

Responsibility starts at home

There are so many roads and highways nowadays, and so many people using them on a daily basis, that motor vehicle transport is often taken for granted.  Unfortunately, some road users think that because they spend a lot of time on the road, or are only on a short journey, that safety rules do not apply to them.  There are numerous accidents each year which could have easily been avoided if those concerned had just obeyed the law or maintained their car right.  Speed limits and road signs are always there for a reason, even if you have travelled down a road pretty much every day for years, it does not mean that you can assume you are safer there than on any other.  In fact, a lot of accidents occur because drivers tend to let their guard down just that little bit more on familiar roads.
There are numerous ways in which you can increase your road safety – some like to go on extra driving courses, especially if it is a long time since they got their driver’s licence.  It is important to always make sure that you are feeling up to driving, being very tired can slow reactions considerably.  Of course it goes without saying that you should never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as this is extremely dangerous, not only to yourself and your passengers, but for other road users.  Another way to be responsible on the roads is to keep your vehicle in the best possible condition.  Items such as tires, Brake pads and exhausts need checking regularly as they wear over time and with use.  All these elements are important – remember that tires are a vehicles only contact with the road; if they are damaged or inadequately inflated it can compromise the grip and hold on the pavement, putting road users in danger.  Brake pads and rotors are important for obvious reasons.  Being able to stop quickly and safely is vital to any vehicle, so making sure brake parts are well maintained and replaced when necessary is absolutely essential.

What Are The Advantages Of Investing In Silver Coins?

There are thousands of types of investments that you can make today. There are so many financial options that it is best to diversify and also get help with managing your money. One type of investment that is made is in silver coins. This is literally buying the coins versus investing in shares or commodities. Find out the advantages of this process over other types of investments.
Investing in silver coins protect your money from inflation. The currencies in the world tend to go down in value as more of it is pumped into the economy over time. Most currencies continue to lose value each year. If you have some of your money in silver coins, you protect yourself from the loss of money from inflation.
There is less paperwork and legal obstacles when buying silver coins versus other types of precious metals. For many metals, there are legal issues involved with buying and selling them. You don't want to get caught up in breaking the law on accident because you are not aware of what documents you need. Silver doesn't have these problems.
Silver coins since they are lower in value are easier to trade than gold coins. It's hard to trade an ounce of gold since it's worth hundreds of dollars. An ounce of silver is much easier to exchange for real goods. This leaves you the option of converting the coins into cash or just using them as cash for services and goods.
Silver isn't speculated on as heavily as other types of metals. This means that the market has more stables prices. This is good because it's less likely to have artificial market bubbles.
There is a chance that future industrial needs might drive up the price of silver. Other types of investments don't have this market demand that could potentially drive up the price.
